Backstage Living

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
— Matthew 6:1 ESV

I am convinced that most of our "best work" for the Lord goes unseen -- and that is the way God wants it. Hidden righteousness!

I was thinking about this as I walked away from a meeting with the school board of Spanish River Christian School yesterday evening. These men and women carry on work that is highly significant, absolutely critical, and largely unseen and unknown.

Their efforts brought to mind a quote posted on the wall of my son's office. I saw it yesterday as I sat there for a few minutes. The words come from Anne Sullivan, the woman who brought light to Helen Keller's dark world:

People seldom see the halting and painful steps by which the most insignificant success is achieved.
— Anne Sullivan

The greatest performances of life occur "backstage," our contributions out of sight and out of the mind of others: meals prepared, service rendered, prayers offered, time invested, effort exerted. In that sense we are all a lot like Anne, most of what we do going unnoticed and unrecognized.

But God sees and God rewards.
