The Only Place You Are Safe

The name of the Lord is a strong tower;the righteous man runs into it and is safe.A rich man's wealth is his strong city, and like a high wall in his imagination.Proverbs 18:10-11 ESV

The Quote: "Trusting wealth may seem to pay for a while, but, eventually, in the end, its inability to protect and deliver is uncovered. Woe to the one who rests his hopes in riches! Read Psalm 49 for a vivid expression of the fragile nature of hope in earthly wealth." John A. Kitchen, Proverbs.

The Question:The writer of Proverbs is contrasting those who trust in the LORD with those who find their security in their possessions. When he uses "the name of the LORD" he is not referring to the letters that spell God's name, but to the full expression of who God is in all his splendor. He is not decrying wealth, but depending on wealth as a safety net in life. We can trust in our money or we can trust in God. We can trust in our expertise or we can trust in God. We can trust in our friends or we can trust in God. Where is your trust? Are you running to the only Strong Tower today?
